Whoopi Goldberg and Maya Elisabeth launched their medical cannabis brand Whoopi and Maya at the end of March. Their company, which produces products specifically aimed at curing menstrual cramps, is already gaining praise from big names in the medical marijuana field.
Dr. Dina, the cannabis advocate nicknamed by Snoop Dogg, is one of the few who will get to sell Goldberg’s product once it hits California dispensaries. She works with Alternative Herbal Health Services (AHHS), which has been in West Hollywood for over 13 years.
“I’m actually a good personal friend of Whoopi’s, she’s been a patient of ours for a while,” Dr. Dina said. “For years she’s been telling me wouldn’t it be great if we could get rid of our cramps?”
That’s how the idea started. Goldberg quit cigarettes and started using marijuana vape pens a few years ago. Although she has been an advocate for a while, it was the pain of menstrual cramps that pushed her to start her own company.
But Goldberg only wanted to work with the best ingredients, the best bud, and the best people, and that’s why she joined up with Elisabeth. But she’s not the only one. Alix Hadley, CEO of C.R.A.F.T Collective, a boutique delivery service in Berkeley has loved Elisabeth’s products for a while.
“Maya is just a dream . . . I saw the ingredients of her products were amazing, and she happened to reach out to me before I reached out to her and it was like a match made in heaven,” Hadley said. She’s had Elisabeth’s products on C.R.A.F.T.’s shelves for the last eight months.
Elisabeth was the founder of Om Edibles and has won seven Cannabis Cup awards before she partnered with Goldberg.
“I just started adding in all the things she carried and so when the Whoopi and Maya opportunity came along, I of course was going to be 110% behind her,” Hadley said. Both Hadley and Dr. Dina know their patients have been waiting for products like Whoopi and Maya’s for a long time.
“When you look at how many women are out there that have this problem, it’s so huge and half of our clientele base are women,” Dr. Dina said. People come into her store suffering from pains from cancer, glaucoma, back pain, and the like, but women are coming specifically looking for menstrual pain relief.
Right now the Whoopi and Maya company has four products. The Soak, Savor, Rub, and Relax. Each blends a mix of cannabis and other natural ingredients to help women through their monthly cycle.
“Menstrual cramps are a big deal for me. I have endometriosis so this products is key, especially for people who don’t want to take pharmaceuticals to relieve their pain,” Hadley said. She enjoys the sipping cacao or Savor the most.
For Dr. Dina, it’s more about soaking in the tub and letting the mixture of Epsom Salt and cannabis wash away her pain. She prefers the Soak.
“You’re soaking in more than just cannabis, these are pharmaceutical grade Epsom Salts, and there’s magnesium . . .you have all these deficiencies when you’re PMSing and so it really is a medical product, it’s great,” Dr. Dina said. Though that doesn’t mean she doesn’t love the salve as well. The Rub is also a necessity.
“Its silky smooth, its almost like rubbing a coconut oil or an olive oil, and I didn’t notice anything for about 20 minutes but then I noticed major relief,” Dr. Dina said.
Another benefit from Whoopi and Maya products is that they come using either THC or CBD depending on if you’d rather just get rid of the pain and skip the high. Their products hit these select dispensary’s shelves in just a few weeks, but the company hopes to expand more after initial sales.
Goldberg hopes that her name and new brand will continue to help the fight in legalizing marijuana so that products like hers can help people all over the country, and world.
