Last November, VapeXhale released a statement announcing the newly formed partnership between the company and former NFL player Eugene Monroe.

VapeXhale and Monroe are on a mission to advocate on cannabis legalization through strategic partnerships, and attending key events this year. Cannabis brands and influencers that are participating in the national dialogue on cannabis legalization are important for the future of this industry.

Eugene Monroe
Eugene Monroe, former NFL offensive tackle for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2009-2013) and Baltimore Ravens (2013-2015).

Eugene Monroe was the first active NFL player to openly advocate for the use of cannabinoids to treat chronic pain and sports-related injuries.

On July 21, 2016, after seven years in the NFL, Eugene retired from the game of football at the age of 29. The sport he loves had taken its toll on his body, from chronic pain and head trauma to acute injuries, and Eugene made the decision to focus on his health and his family.

Eugene is calling on the NFL to remove cannabis from the banned substances list and he continues to advocate for medical cannabis research through education, donations and speaking appearances.

We sat down with Sheibo Shen to discuss the partnership.

How did your relationship grow into a partnership?

Ultimately our ideologies aligned on how we wanted to push this movement forward, and what type of message we wanted to push, which was cannabis is great, but like any other tool, you can abuse it.

Eugene Monroe at the time, I think had a $9 million dollar a year contract and was speaking out against the league — he had more to lose than retired players speaking up.

Could you further explain “cannabis is great, but like any other tool, you can abuse it”

We want to be pro responsible cannabis use, we all know people who have abused the plant, that have taken advantage of the fact there have been no deaths, and smoke, dab, and vape too much.

Something that Eugene and I talked at length about, “how do we get people to use this responsibly where it helps their lives and it’s not inhibiting from achieving their dreams?”

Where did you meet Eugene Monroe first?

We first met in person at the San Diego Cannabis Conference, he was out there supporting other ex NFL players Kyle Turley and Terren Jones. We ended up finding out we’re both family men, extremely passionate and vocal about the things we support.

What events does VapexHale see itself attending in 2017 since the partnership with Monroe will be strategically focused on education and advocacy?

We participate in most of the B2B events, all the events we see DCN at — ArcView , MJ Biz Conference, New West Summit , and we are also going bigger this year, South by Southwest (SXSW), we are doing a panel there with Eugene on safe cannabinoid use.

We also want to do more music events, events that get us out in front of different audiences. To find people who may have some interest in cannabis, but don’t identify with cannabis users, but can benefit from cannabis knowledge such as knowing CBD and terpene knowledge to regulate their own physiology and lead a more fulfilling life.

Editor’s Note: I personally believe in highlighting the importance of brands participating in the national dialogue happening right now on cannabis. In order to progress this industry forward, we need to venture outside of the cannabis industry’s bubble, and forge into new spaces where these conversations are not easily held.
