Each week we highlight entrepreneurs in the cannabis industry for our viewers to learn more about the leading cannabis executives of our time.
This week, we highlight Luca Andrea, Founder of Biscotti. Luca was born in Pavia, Italy. Luca Andrea spent his life traveling the world as his father pursued a career in international human rights.
Throughout his travels, Luca learned of and studied traditional hashish making in Morocco, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Northern India, and Nepal. He admired each country’s unique hash making traditions and was inspired to merge these historic traditions with the Italian craftsmanship of his own culture.
However, the negative perception and strict anti-cannabis laws in Italy kept him from pursuing his dreams in his homeland. So, Luca left his life in Italy for Oakland, California where he attended Oaksterdam University and met a diverse team of cannabis experts with a similar narrative. We all come from backgrounds where cannabis consumption was negatively stigmatized and judged. Like many people today, we were afraid to leave our comfortable lives to forge a path filled with judgement and the unknown.
However, it was our shared decision to finally overcome these fears that brought Biscotti to life. To us, Biscotti signifies challenging the status quo. Cannabis has positively affected each of our lives in different ways, and it has become our mission to share these stories with the world. From the moment, you hold a Biscotti product, we hope to transport your mind across the globe where you are free to explore your deepest dreams and desires. Biscotti inspired us to live our dreams. We hope it will for you too.
In our interview with Luca, we asked a variety of questions to gain further insight into Biscotti Brands, building a business in the cannabis industry and much more!
First off Luca, congratulations on being featured as this week’s entrepreneur of the week! Can you please share with our readers about Biscotti Brands?
Luca Andrea: Of course! Biscotti exists to redefine the cannabis experience. Through continuous innovation and our commitment to tradition, we strive to create unique products for cannabis users across generations. We believe that quality should never be compromised. Our products are clean, organic, and sustainably produced at the highest-quality of standards.
What ignited the spark in you to start to launch your business? Or how did your idea evolve?
Luca Andrea: I launched my own business after realizing that I was working, and attempting to work for, companies I could easily compete with. I saw a gap in the market for a more premium brand and knew I could fill that void.
How are you helping the cannabis industry in a positive way?
Luca Andrea: I am trying to remove the stigma that is associated with cannabis. I wanted to create a company that my parents, and their friends, could approach without fearing judgement.
Who is your role model, and why?
Luca Andrea: My role model is my mother. My mother has been by my father’s side since the beginning and has maintained stability within the family through the numerous war-torn countries we have lived in. We lived in Palestine, Israel, Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, Bangladesh, Lebanon, and other countries affected by wars. Her internal strength kept the family at ease while dealing with the most devastating of societal conditions.
What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Luca Andrea: Accepting your internal insanity. Constant hybridity and the willingness to never stop learning. The ability to creatively shape your own future.
Being an entrepreneur is a lifestyle, how do you stay balanced?
Luca Andrea: My girlfriend is my rock. She is able to calm me down when life seems to be spiraling out of control.
What is the best piece of advice you can give to others looking to launch a company in the cannabis industry?
Luca Andrea: Accept that you are entering a crazy new industry. If you are not partially insane, you will have a hard time coping with this Wild Wild West.
What is the hardest part of running a startup?
Luca Andrea: The most difficult part of founding and running a startup is managing your best friends as employees.
Is there anything that surprised you about being an entrepreneur in the cannabis industry?
Luca Andrea: Nothing surprises me at this point. At first, it all comes to you as a shock, but you soon begin to realize that every facet of the industry is unstable.
Being a founder, we are bound to make a mistake or two, what is one mistake you made that turned up being one of your biggest learning lessons?
Luca Andrea: I learned that everyone fends for themselves in this industry and that you should always look after yourself.
What book has inspired you the most?
Luca Andrea Collins: The Lean Startup
Excluding yours, what brand or company do you admire most?
Luca Andrea: I admire Will Senn and the brand he has created, Urbn Leaf.
How can we as an industry continue to make a positive difference in society?
Luca Andrea: We must all push ourselves to create products and brands that appeal to a wider audience. The brands we create should make antagonists want to think twice before mislabeling our beloved plant.
