In our interview with Kat King, we asked a variety of questions to learn more about the Cannamahila, and what it takes to build a startup in the cannabis industry!
DCN: Kat, congratulations on being featured as this week’s entrepreneur of the week and for all that you do! Can you please share with our readers your elevator pitch for Cannamahila?
Kat King: Exquisite, Organic, Skin Care Products. The anti-inflammatory powerhouse of ingredients in the Eye Roller & Body Budder is a unique formulation that produces immediate results.
DCN: What ignited the spark in you to launch your business?
Kat King: In 1999, my passion was sparked for making herbal medicines. I lived on a magnificent, certified organic farm in the “Emerald Triangle” of British Columbia for a few seasons and learned how to plant every herb, harvest and make an entire product line from them. Everything from calendula, chamomile, and comfrey to the most amazing roots of burdock and yellow dock.
DCN: When you finally decided that you wanted to launch a business in the cannabis industry, what was your experience like when telling your family and friends? Were they supportive?
Kat King: My family and friends have supported my Cannabis life for over twenty-five years…they are happy to see me fulfilling my life purpose. They are all super supportive and are all a part of my success as a Cannapreneur. It takes a village!
DCN: What is unique about your business?
Kat King: My business is unique because I bring twenty-five years of connections and integrity in the cannabis space. I have learned that is my most valuable asset in the current marketplace. Hands on experience! I am a Plant Medicine woman.
As far as Cannamahila Skincare – Two words: Moon Medicine. I believe in making medicines according to the Lunar Cycles. From the time of planting, harvesting to infusing. This is a practice I learned from my very first Canna harvest in 1993. I am bringing that same energy into the Cannamahila CBD Skincare line.
In addition, there is no other product on the market that has combined these specific ingredients. My chemist/herbalist and I worked on this formulation for months to specifically target inflammation for eczema/ psoriasis patients, so they can replace their over-priced, chemical Pharma regimen. The CBD Eye Roller works like a miracle under-eye treatment.
DCN: What are some challenges you faced early on and how’d you beat them?
Kat King: Whether to accept seed investment or bootstrap. I decided to bootstrap!
DCN: How did you come up with the name of your company?
Kat King: Canna is obvious. Mahila is a Hindi word that translates into “She Knows”. I am spiritually connected to this word. It is a strong female name in India and infers to “one who is given knowledge and shares that knowledge with others”. A Cannabis “Mother” or Canna “Healer/Teacher”. I am a steward of the plant.
DCN: What did you give up to get where you are today?
Kat King: I sacrificed having a marriage or a family to pursue my life in Cannabis and Film. I made the decision when I was very young. It never changed.
DCN: What is the best piece of advice you can give to others looking to launch a company in the cannabis industry?
Kat King: Find Your Niche
DCN: What’s the hardest part of founding and running a startup?
Kat King: Wearing all of the Hats. Being humble enough to ask for help when needed and to know my own bandwidth!
DCN: Is there anything that surprised you about being an entrepreneur in the cannabis industry?
Kat King: Nothing surprises me with this industry. I try to stay in the flow with the changing tides.
DCN: How do you stay balanced?
Kat King: Living a YOGIC lifestyle. Daily meditation practice, positive pranic food only, Aligning my energies daily (Bhuta Shuddhi practice), and most importantly…aligning my life with conscious friends and colleagues. Self-care and spending quiet time in nature also help keep me in alignment. I also do volunteer work with a Yogic foundation.
DCN: What book has inspired you the most?
Kat King: “Mystics Musings” by Jaggi Vasudev (Sadhguru)
DCN: Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?
Kat King: Educational, Media Companies & Female-Owned Companies.
DCN: How can we as an industry continue to make a positive difference in society?
Kat King: Educating the masses on the benefits of plant medicine.
DCN: Thank you, Kat, for sharing your story and offering such real and insightful advice to DCN readers!
