Each week we highlight entrepreneurs in the cannabis industry for our viewers to learn more about the leading cannabis executives of our time. This week, we highlight Arman Zeytounyan of EcoWaste Services, Inc.

Meet Arman Zeytouyan

Arman Zeytouyan faced many bumps on his entrepreneur journey like many other entrepreneurs, and business owners do. However, he found his passion primary being a serial entrepreneur and has since maintained and grown multiple businesses throughout his journey. In 2015, he began a home healthcare therapy business that he quickly sold in 2016. Throughout that time, however, he was still managing and maintaining his medical waste management services with his partner that was launched in 2011.

As the Biowaste company started to take off, they saw the need for a cannabis waste management solution in the cannabis space, and with their knowledge and experience, they officially launched Ecowaste to provide their expertise in specialized waste for the cannabis industry.

It started as an organic, or green, waste disposal service for the food and construction industry. During these early stages, they began testing their process and setting up a durable infrastructure.

2018 marked the year of recreational cannabis in the State of California. And almost immediately began receiving requests early in the year to collect cannabis waste for new legalized cannabis businesses. During this time they knew they were right about this new niche and how it fit so well with their expertise: specialized waste management. Since then they made it a mission to service & educate the industry for proper cannabis waste management practices.

In our interview with Arman, we asked a variety of questions to learn more about EcoWaste Services, and what it takes to build a startup in the cannabis industry!

DCN: Arman, congratulations on being featured as this week’s entrepreneur of the week and for all that you do! Can you please share with our readers your elevator pitch for EcoWaste Services Inc.?

Arman Zeytounyan: EcoWaste services is the leading cannabis waste disposal provider. We have a hyper-focus on customer experience and with our experience running our medical waste company we provide a reliable and trusted cannabis waste disposal service for the industry.

DCN: What ignited the spark in you to launch your business?

Arman Zeytounyan: Ecowaste was actually founded in 2016 to provide organic green waste solutions for all business in southern California including cannabis operations. Since then we began to specialize in cannabis waste.

DCN: When you finally decided that you wanted to launch a business in the cannabis industry, what was your experience like when telling your family and friends? Were they supportive?

Arman Zeytounyan: Yes! Everyone in my circle was supportive because they understood that as a business enthusiast it was my duty to create a service that solves a problem for an emerging industry.

DCN: What are some challenges you faced early on and how’d you beat them?

Arman Zeytounyan: Our main challenge is educating an industry that is hesitant to invest more of their revenue into a service they never needed before. After all few people think, or care, about waste. It’s still a challenge for us today, but we’ve found that by constantly sharing our insight and providing the resources to learn more is how we overcome this hurdle.

DCN: What is the best piece of advice you can give to others looking to launch a company in the cannabis industry?

Arman Zeytounyan: Don’t just dive in without giving any thought to the risks involved. It’s still so early right now, and most people are blinded by the green rush. Ancillary services are the way to go. Sticking to the fundamentals of business is how to launch a successful company in the cannabis industry. Provide a supply to a demand.

DCN: What’s the hardest part of founding and running a startup?

Arman Zeytounyan: Wearing more than one hat. A difficulty any new business has is that the founders typically have to wear multiple hats, which in a way is a good thing. It builds character, forces you to work hard, build your foundation right, and learn your strengths and weaknesses.

DCN: Is there anything that surprised you about being an entrepreneur in the cannabis industry?

Arman Zeytounyan:  The people. I always knew the industry was full of happy going individuals but to see them band together is truly a powerful sight.

DCN: How do you stay balanced?

Arman Zeytounyan: I’m a strong believer in balance, and it’s hard when your a founder that’s laser-focused but I always have to remind myself that taking a break throughout the day is needed to keep my energy levels high.

DCN: What book has inspired you the most?

Arman Zeytounyan: Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson

DCN: How can we as an industry continue to make a positive difference in society?

Arman Zeytounyan: By taking the regulations seriously and learning to operate as a business, not an underground hustle.

DCN: Thank you, Arman, for sharing your story and offering such real and insightful advice to DCN readers!
