In our interview with AC, we asked a variety of questions to learn more about Croptop Greenhouses, and what it takes to build a startup in the cannabis industry!
DCN: AC, congratulations on being featured as this week’s entrepreneur of the week and for all that you do! Can you please share with our readers your elevator pitch for Croptop Greenhouses?
AC Moon: Croptops Greenhouses is a female patented instant popup greenhouse to protect plants from storms and pest damage. Croptops provides an easy set up with a patented telescopic pole with a carry case design that allows you to quarantine pest damage for haustoria controls, pollinating, etc. as well as instantly protect your outdoor and large greenhouse plants from storms and frost. It weighs 9.2 lbs and is 92% recyclable.
DCN: What ignited the spark in you to launch your business?
AC Moon: I am a professional master grower with 20 years experience and needed to find a way to protect plants and quarantine genetics easily, and I knew I wasn’t alone which evolved into the development of Croptop Greenhouses.
DCN: When you finally decided that you wanted to launch a business in the cannabis industry, what was your experience like when telling your family and friends? Were they supportive?
AC Moon: My first business Harvest Moon Munchies co was during the medical platform in 2001, and everyone near me had cancer or interacted with an illness….. I wanted to help organically, and everyone loved it. From 2001 to now peoples opinions have changed significantly. With Croptops Greenhouses everyone has been very supportive and curious that I was able to get a patent. Although I don’t have much family, my industry and friends have thought it was neat.
DCN: What is unique about your business?
AC Moon: Both of my companies achieved new trademarks, one of which has the cannabis symbol. Also, as I mentioned above, I also received a patent for Croptops Greenhouses.
DCN: What are some challenges you faced early on and how’d you beat them?
AC Moon: With Harvest Moon Munchies co it’s been having funds to evolve from medical to a recreational platform. With Croptops Greenhouses it’s been the battle of proving the worth of my inventions publicly and with I.P. as well as needing funds for evolving the product line. Being a solo women entrepreneur has definitely been challenging.
DCN: How did you come up with the name of your company?
AC Moon: I use every aspect of the plant I grow to create something that can help. For example my first company Harvest Moon Munchies. When looking at Croptop Greenhouses, I came up with the name while I was smoking a joint with friends and brainstorming. I realized it was merely a Top for your Crop.. i.e., Croptops.
DCN: What did you give up to get where you are today?
AC Moon: So much, oh my goodness, I have many stories that I’ve written, from giving most of my life’s freedom. I have never had the time to settle down or have a family yet. However, I made it my mission to have my whole life dedicated to educating, growing, cooking, learning and evolving in the industry.
DCN: What is the best piece of advice you can give to others looking to launch a company in the cannabis industry?
AC Moon: Don’t be afraid to reinvent yourself, be diverse and resourceful with your thinking and be determined through the entire ride.
DCN: What’s the hardest part of founding and running a startup?
AC Moon: Being alone on a journey and proving to the world that your processes for edibles and infusions are the best…as well as showing everyone that my invention is worthy of note and exists. Doing everything alone has made it tough to have time to find investors and companions.
DCN: Is there anything that surprised you about being an entrepreneur in the cannabis industry?
AC Moon: I’ve been involved for 20 years so the only thing that is surprising is some of the new rules and regulations and how low quality is beginning to run our industry more so again.
DCN: How do you stay balanced?
AC Moon: I writing books, poetry, school classes, paint canvas, building an off-grid home on my 40 acres deep in woods. I also do gardening, tissue culture, and crafts of all forms to allow for the creativity to invent! I enjoy dancing, yoga and traveling around the world and learning.
DCN: What book has inspired you the most?
AC Moon: Currently it is Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck. In the past, I’ve been heavily influenced by fairy tales. I read the dictionary when I was 10 and have read so many books by Carl Sagan.
DCN: How can we as an industry continue to make a positive difference in society?
AC Moon: Further empower each other to educate, open eyes and be involved with the changes around us, be aware how each aspect of the industry affects the world and don’t be afraid to speak your truths.
DCN: Thank you, AC, for sharing your story and offering such real and insightful advice to DCN readers! Before we let you go, do you have any last words to share?
AC Moon: I would like to share some pretty awesome wins on this journey. I was voted one of Skunk magazines Women of Weed and featured as Entrepreneur of the Month by Entrepreneur Magazine. Most recently, I also started a Hash Yoga program, and I am teaching proper posture in cannabis industry jobs. Along with offering to consult many other people and businesses going on this journey in cannabis.
